Description

Learn Scottish woodcarving traditions in the forest at Inshriach, close to Aviemore. Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Highlanders by replicating a 2000 year old Highlands cup of your own. With expert tuition from Wooden Tom, you will be guided to safely use hand tools such as a knife and axe to create your own  Highlands kuksa cup or whisky quaich to take home.

This is one of the more technical and physical courses so to get the most out of it, it is recommended you have done some woodwork before or at least used to working with your hands in other activities.  Either that or you just have bags of enthusiasm!  This is a great course to learn many of the grounding skills in one day which are transferable on to other carving projects.

Skills learned

  • Using an axe to accurately cleave wood
  • Correct use of the carving axe to rough out the shape of your item
  • Safe use and cutting techniques with the carving knife and gouge

Tools used

  • Carving axe
  • Saw
  • Carving knife
  • Gouge
  • Mallet

As much freshly made coffee or tea as you can take are included in the course cost.  At the end of the day there will be a chance to buy some of the tools you have used if you like.

All materials and tools are supplied. Though we never expect mishaps, Wooden Tom is First Aid trained and holds full Public Liability Insurance.

All courses are held in beautiful oak woodlands on the Inshriach estate, just outside of Aviemore. For more information on location and surroundings, click here.
