Spring 🌱 is coming to the Highlands. This is traditionally my time to get Birch bark for containers.

In the Scottish Highlands with it's knarley, branchy Birch it is much harder to get big enough clean bits of bark to make with compared to other parts of the word.

So I only make pots when I have access to really nice bark...which is not every year. An inconsistent harvest just makes it feel more of a treat when you get a good tree.

Although you can take the outer bark off without killing the tree I tend not to and only take it if the tree is down anyway

I use wood shavings (these ones are from the drill) to pack out the boxes.

The whole box can be reused or makes a perfect fire starter 😁

HOW to FIX a CUP WITH a HOLE?

This method of using a Birch bark plaster is especially good if the walls of your cup are really thin so that you can't use a dowel. It's also better than using a wooden plaster as it moulds to those curvy shapes
